A selection of the work I ran as lead designer and project manager at Reyhan Mühendislik & İnşaat. Property advice grew out of it.
An apartment is usually judged on its location and its price. I read the plan and the light as well, having spent nine years on the drawing side of them. What follows is from those years.
A two-bedroom apartment, all of it: entrance, kitchen, living room, bedrooms. Turning the empty shell a developer hands over into somewhere liveable is something I still think about when I walk through a unit in Dubai. I drew the kitchen island, the lighting layout and the runs of storage myself.
A two-storey villa. Most of my time went on the stairwell, the one volume tying the floors together; when the light there is not right, the house starts to read as two separate houses. Entrance hall, kitchen, dining area, bathrooms and bedrooms were all part of the same job.
A villa that was already being lived in. The standing walls, the services in place and a set budget were all given from the start. I measured and photographed the space on site, then redrew the entrance, the living area and the kitchen.
A detached house in the States, run from a distance start to finish. Measurements and photographs came to me, I drew the design here, and we settled things together on video calls. Much of how I work with clients buying in Dubai sight unseen came out of this project.
Facade design for a three-storey apartment building, along with an animation. Material, proportion and night lighting were all settled together, in the same conversation. I put the animation together so that could be shown off the drawing.
The smallest job on this page: a child's room for a family in Belgium. Bed, desk and storage went onto one continuous line, which left the rest of the floor clear. Rooms this size are how I began working with clients in Europe.
Classrooms, a robotics workshop and a staff room, refurbished under a corporate sponsorship. It was not commercial work, and it is part of why I am glad to keep it on this list. In the classrooms I worked out the seating and the daylight first, and chose materials afterwards.
